Purpose of the Trip and Brief Itinerary*Visits include Dachau, the Nazis’ model for all future concentration camps, and a sobering reminder of the regime’s utter disregard of human rights and dignity. At Nuremberg, visit the decaying rally grounds that once hosted thousands of fanatical supporters, the excellent Museum of Fascination and Terror; and the Courtroom where leading Nazis answered for their deeds in the 1946 Nuremberg Trials. A walking tour of Munich will focus on Adolf Hitler’s life there before and after the Great War, the Beer Hall putsch of 1923, and the city’s roles as ‘capital of German art’, ‘capital of the movement’ and focal point of attempts to prevent a second world war in the Munich Agreement of 1938. Opposition to Hitler and the Nazis will also be examined, including the resistance of those who avoided giving the Hitler salute, those like Georg Elser who tried to assassinate Hitler, and those who tried to awaken Germans to the horrors being carried out in their name. Munich’s National Socialist Documentation Centre affords an opportunity to reflect on how post-war Germany has come to terms with its dark past. In lighter vein, despite wartime damage Munich and Nuremberg remain attractive places and there will be some opportunity to explore their delights.
