Read on to find out more about this trip
Dates* October Half Term 2025 and 2027Open to: Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth
Trip Leader: Mr P Neal
Cost*: £tbc
Purpose of the Trip & Brief Itinerary*The itinerary has been designed to develop understanding of the A level Paper 1 topic ‘Germany and West Germany, 1918-89’ as well as giving students a historical understanding of one of Europe’s great cities.
Starting with a walking tour on our first afternoon, students will be immediately immersed in Weimar, Nazi and Cold War history. The Brandenburg Gate, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the site of Hitler’s bunker, the Berlin Wall, and Bundestag (Reichstag) are all included and provide the context for the next four packed days. Like the city itself, our study trip has evolved over the years but whilst it is impossible to see all the sights in a few days, our itinerary will endeavour to thread a narrative through Berlin’s turbulent and remarkable history. From the splendour and tranquillity of Potsdam to the modernity of Potsdamer Platz, Berlin is a city of stimulating contrasts. Other highlights include visits to the German Parliament and Reichstag Dome, and the Jewish Museum, a tour of the Olympiastadion Berlin (home of the 1936 Olympics and EURO 2024 final) and visits to Tempelhof airport (key to the success of the 1948-49 Berlin Airlift) and the monumental Soviet memorial at Treptower Park.
